Before becoming the favourite seaside destination of the world’s jet set, Saint-Tropez was a small Provençal village, nestled on a peninsula surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. From being a base used by privateers in the 16th century, the town became a fishing port in the early 20th century and then, from the 1950s, acquired its legendary and international reputation. Today, people flock here for its magnificent beaches and to gawp at the celebrity mega-yachts moored in the port. However, with its luxury boutiques, petanque matches on Place des Lices, listed citadel and famous movie location Gendarmerie station, underneath all its bling, Saint-Tropez has managed to keep its authenticity.
